To improve the cross-boundary environment of Hong Kong and Shenzhen, the Governments of the two sides carried out improvement works for the Lo Wu Footbridge.  The works include enclosing the footbridge, installation of air-conditioning system on the footbridge and widening of the footbridge by some 60% or about 5.5 metres.  The extended portion of the footbridge was opened for use on 19 January 2005.
